How to Enjoy the Little Things

What’s blocking you from the little things in life?

We all want to cultivate more happiness in our lives.

So often, however, we unconsciously allow schedules, commitments, bills, and the busyness of life to block us from the joy that is available to us right now.

If you aren’t enjoying your life, you’ve likely been focusing on the wrong things and giving your attention to the things that don’t bring you joy.

What you give your attention to will only magnify.

That’s because energy flows where your attention goes.

The good news is that there is ONE simple shift that can help you enjoy the little things in life.

Let the little things become the big things.

Little things like watching a sunset and slowing down to taste your food are often overlooked. The little things in life want to become the big things in your life.

Rather than focusing on busyness, distractions, and negativity, allow the things that you’ve overlooked become your priority.

This requires some mental, physical, and spiritual boundary setting. Enjoying the little things is a conscious choice, so you must intentionally prioritize your happiness over the distractions that pull you away from your well-being.

So, how do you do this?

I’ve listed 5 steps you can take right now to begin prioritizing and enjoying the little things in life.

1. Simplify your life

If busyness is blocking you from enjoying the little things in life, it’s time to simplify!

The first thing to remember is that you control your schedule; your schedule doesn’t control you.

Say “no” to the activities that don’t light you up and set aside time on the calendar each day for soul care – to breathe, nourish yourself, meditate, spend time in nature, journal, and listen to your soul.

2. Remove distractions

The average American spends 2.6 hours a day on their phone. That’s over 5 years of your life spent on your phone!

That’s five years that you could be spending having soulful conversations with friends, watching the waves crash on the shore, and stargazing until the wee hours of the morning.

Pay attention to what pulls you away from your true self.

Set limits on how often you allow those things into your life or remove those distractions entirely.

3. Meditate

4. Spend time in nature

Spending time in nature grounds you. It brings you into the present moment and reminds you of what’s truly important.

When nature strips you of false identities and distractions, you are left with the little things – the true things – that will bring you joy.

5. Keep a praise journal

This simple practice can significantly transform your mindset. If you’ve been blocking your joy by focusing on the things that drag you down, start a praise journal.

A praise journal is a place to record all things happy.

At the end of each day, recall the compliments you received, reflect on where you saw the Divine show up (don’t forget the small things like seeing the Divine in a beautiful flower or in a child’s playfulness), and write down all the things you are grateful for. Revisit what you wrote in your journal as often as you’d like. This practice will rewire your brain to be happier as you look for the miracles and joy in your everyday life rather than looking for the negative.

A Final Note!

Every day you are given the opportunity to see the Divine’s presence in ordinary things. By looking for and focusing on the sacredness that surrounds you, you transform an ordinary day into one that is extraordinary. That is how you enjoy the little things in life.
